Dr. Fernandez is the co-founder and served as Director of Trauma Surgery and the Head of Trauma Surgery at Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, Texas. He served as president of the Division of Surgery of Trauma and Critical Surgical Care, President Emeritus, Division of Trauma Surgery / Acute Care, Associate Director of Medical Trauma, Chief of Flight Surgeons and Head of the Care Unit / Surgical Critical Traumatology at CHRISTUS Trinity Hospital Mother Frances from 1993-2019. He is certified by the Board in General Surgery and Critical Surgical Care, Forensic Traumatology and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dr. Fernandez is a clinical assistant professor of surgery and family medicine at the Health Center of the University of Texas at Tyler. He was also a member of the teaching staff of the Division of Surgery of the Mother Frances Health System in Tyler from 2014 to 2019.
Dr. Fernández works as Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing and Medicine at the U.T. Arlington School of Nursing, Assistant Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Education, UNT Health Sciences Center, Fort Worth, Texas, Assistant Professor of Clinical Assistance, Department of Medical Assistant Studies, School of Health Professions, University of North Texas, Fort Worth, Texas, and has been an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Fernandez attended the University of Miami for pre-medical studies and completed his doctorate in medicine at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico. Dr. Fernandez obtained his residency training at Loyola University, University of Illinois, University of Chicago and Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, with special training in Trauma and Burns at King's County Hospital, SUNY Down State System, Brooklyn, New York, NEW YORK.
Dr. Fernandez is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the International College of Surgeons, the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and the Inter-American College of Physicians and Surgeons. Surgeons, among others. He is a member of "The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma", the American Association for Trauma Surgery, the American Burn Association, the Surgical Society of Texas, the Medical Association of Texas, among others.
